Tuberculosis Testing Procedure

(1)

All dairy cattle over two years of age shall be tested for tuberculosis by an official veterinarian once every six years.

(2)

Herds tested for tuberculosis in which animals are found showing a classification of reactor or suspect shall be handled in accordance with the applicable section of USDA/APHIS VS publication Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication, Uniform Methods and Rules current as of the date of disclosure of the reactors or suspects to the tuberculosis test.

An area may be designated by the Department by regulation as a test area. All cattle over two years of age in all herds must be tested by an official veterinarian in such a designated area and within the time limits set by the Department.

If a tuberculosis infected bovine animal is found post mortem inspection at slaughter, the source herd will be identified and tested by the assistant state veterinarians or USDA Veterinary medical officers in accordance with the procedures of the applicable sections of USDA/APHIS VS publication Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication, Uniform Methods and Rules current.

Upon reading the test for tuberculosis on any livestock, the veterinarian shall:

(a)

Notify the owner of the test results of the herd;

(b)

Brand and tag with a reactor eartag any reactors to the test;

(c)

Quarantine the herd if the test reveals reactors, or individual animals if suspect.
