Visual Inspection

(1)

Preweld weldment members shall conform to joint configuration cleanliness, fit-up, and tack welding as specified in this procedure.

(2)

In-Process — The welding will be checked to determine that the provisions of this procedure are being followed such as correct preheat, correct electrode, correct weld, layer size, correct electrode size, etc.

(3)

Post-Weld — The finished weld shall be inspected to verify conformance to this specification and weld procedure. The following weld metal defects are considered unacceptable:

(a)

Cracks;

(b)

Craters;

(c)

Porosity exceeding 38-inch in any linear inch of weld and 34-inch in any 12 inches length of weld;

(d)

Incomplete fusion or penetration;

(e)

Undercut exceeding 0.01 inch transverse to primary stress and 132 inch for all other situations;

(f)

Fillet weld undersize exceeding 116-inch over more than 10 percent of the weld length.

(4)

It is highly recommended that postweld inspection by magnetic particle or liquid penetrant methods be employed if available. These methods are an enhancement of visual inspection allowing detection of cracks or discontinuities not discemible to the eye.
