Determining Primary Wage Earner (PWE); TANF

The primary wage earner (PWE) is the parent who earned the most money in the 24 months before requesting assistance.

Once a parent is determined to be the PWE, their status cannot change while the family remains continuously eligible for cash assistance, unless:

The other parent later provides evidence that they should have been the PWE at the time of application; or

The parent who is the PWE is out of the household group for at least one full calendar month. If so, the branch office must redetermine the PWE.
